New Delhi, Dec 16 (Inditop.com) The defence ministry is awaiting the views of national parties on the appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff, which was recommended by the Kargil Review Committee, parliament was informed Wednesday.

The government had constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) April 17, 2000 to review the national security system and to consider the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee.

“The government approved the recommendations contained in the GoM report except those pertaining to the institution of the Chief of Defence Staff, for which it was decided that the government will take a view after consulting various political parties,” Defence Minister A.K. Antony told the Rajya Sabha during question hour.

Antony has written to leaders of various national level parties for their views on the issue.

“Government will take a decision after completion of consultations,” Antony added.

A decade after India and Pakistan’s face-off in the remote areas of Kargil in 1999, the Kargil Review Committee’s recommendation for the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) post as a single point of advice to the government on military matters is yet to be implemented.
