New Delhi, Oct 21 (Inditop.com) The Congress and its Maharashtra ally, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Wednesday downplayed the issue of rotating the chief minister’s post if the alliance retains power in the state.
“(The) NCP is our alliance partner,” Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said when asked about some NCP leaders demanding that the party should be given the chief minister’s post.
She, however, claimed that the “Congress will get maximum” numbers in the state assembly.
She said all the issues would be cleared Thursday after the elections results are out.
Maharashtra, along with Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, voted Oct 13 to elect the state assemblies from which the new state governments will be formed. The votes will be counted Thursday.
Meanwhile, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said he did not expect his party getting the chief minister’s post as the Congress was likely to fare better than his party.
He said the NCP contested only from 112 constituencies and the Congress might get more seats as it fought from 170 constituencies.
NCP’s Maharashtra leader Chhagan Bhujbal had expressed the view on sharing the chief minister’s post by rotation in the state.
Bhujbal had said in Mumbai that if the Congress-NCP alliance retains power, both the parties should share the chief minister’s post for two-and-a-half years each.
He had said the NCP had capable leaders who could shoulder the responsibility of the chief minister’s post.
On Tuesday, the Congress said both the parties would sit together and decide about the government formation.
