Raipur, June 5 (IANS) Chhattisgarh’s main opposition Congress party Saturday slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to revoke the suspension of an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer accused of illegally amassing millions of rupees.

‘The decision to reinstate B.L. Agrawal is completely surprising especially when probes are on against him by the Economic Offences Wing as well as by the Income Tax department,’ Ramesh Varlyani, Congress state unit spokesperson, told IANS.

‘The decision shows that state’s ruling BJP government lacks guts to take action against tainted bureaucrats. Congress believe that BJP government itself is mired in corruption that’s why it reinstated an officer before he was cleared off charges of amassing million of rupees illegally.’

Agrawal, a 1988 batch officer, was suspended Feb 11 after the income tax department told the government that raids at his residence and elsewhere revealed at least 220 bank accounts in the names of people of Kharora, a village some 40 km from here.

Agrawal was also accused of owning assets disproportionate to his known sources of income but the state government reinstated him June 3.
