New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) The Delhi assembly Thursday passed the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill which will pave the way for trifurcation of the civic body.

The bill was passed by voice vote amid uproar by the Bharatiya Janata Party members demanding full statehood for the capital city.

The bill envisages splitting into three separate units the corporation which controls 98 percent of the city with a 1.6-crore population.

Describing the development as ‘historic’, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the trifurcation of MCD will ensure better functioning of the civic agency.

‘We did it in the interest of people. Our intention was to bring administration nearer to the people as per the sense of the 74th Constitutional Amendment. We never tried to take any power from the MCD or Delhi Cantonment Board,’ Dikshit told the assembly.
