Ahmedabad, May 2 (IANS) Gujarat witnessed the grand finale of the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of the state Monday with a series of programmes focussing on the various developments achieved under Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The two-day final bash began Sunday evening at the Sardar Patel Stadium here with thousands of school children in a colourful parade chanting ‘Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat’ (Victory to proud Gujarat).
Over 4,800 children, mostly from families below poverty line, performed at the event.
Even amid high security, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar bore a festive look with all the major roads and prominent public places decorated with colourful lights and big hoardings showcasing Modi’s achievements.
The final events were divided into two days to allow the participation of a larger number of common people.
While Sunday’s events were more for invited guests, including ministers, religious leaders and high ranking officials, the programmes were open for common people Monday.
Modi used his Sunday speech to launch a scathing attack on the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
He said the federal government was misusing its constitutional authorities to harass him, stressing that he would not ‘bow out’.
Amid thunderous applause, Modi said certain elements had developed a habit to defame Gujarat but he would silence all critics with developmental works.
Terming the event as a publicity stunt and a sheer wastage of money, the main opposition Congress boycotted the event and held a separate rally.
