Gandhinagar, May 2 (IANS) Gujarat’s senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjiv Bhatt has received a letter from Director General of Police Chittaranjan Singh asking him to report back for duty.

He is understood to have been told to take permission from his superiors prior to appearing before any commission of enquiry.

Bhatt, the principal of the SRP training school at Chowki near Junagadh, has been directed to appear before the Nanavaty-Mehta commission probing the Godhra riots of 2002.

The spat between Bhatt and his parent department continued.

While the Gujarat DGP had said that since Bhatt has not received any threat, he does not require any protection, the threat assessment carried out by the inspector of the Ghatlodia police station in Ahmedabad tells a different tale.

Inspector S.G. Barochia has reported that Bhatt and his family face threats not only from Hindu fundamentalists but also from organs of the Sangh Parivar.

The report also cited possible threats from Islamic militants as well as Gulf-based underworld for the arms haul he had made as well as the probe he conducted on the RDX landing in Porbandar.

Bhatt sparked off a major controversy after he filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in April raising serious charges against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 Godhra riots.
