New Delhi, May 5 (Inditop) Often the target of political jibes for being a Gandhi scion, Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi said while he felt dynastic politics was “undemocratic”, he would use it to change the system.
Asked by a foreign journalist at a press conference here Tuesday whether it was undemocratic to hold an important position like his because of his family background, Rahul Gandhi said: “It is undemocratic, and it’s a reality that my father, my grandmother, my great grandfather were so and so…. In my perspective that will change nothing.”
“However, my position gives me certain advantages to be able to do something… like the Punjab elections,” he said, referring to the elections to the Punjab Youth Congress held last year.
Gandhi had been instrumental in holding of the Punjab Youth Congress elections – for the first time. It was held in a democratic manner where grassroots party workers voted to elect members, unlike earlier when state youth Congress chiefs and other office bearers were appointed by the party leadership.
“Just because I am the outcome of the system does not mean that I can’t change the system. It is an honour and my duty to try and change the system. It’s ironical,” Gandhi said.
He also reiterated several times during the conference that the democratisation of political parties is important. Gandhi has been pushing for holding of organisational elections within the Congress.
