Jammu, April 7 (Inditop.com) The municipal polls in Jammu and Kashmir have been postponed as the task of revision of electoral rolls was “huge” and hit by the employees strike in the state, an official said Wednesday.

The elections were scheduled to take place in all the cities and towns of Jammu and Kashmir in May.

“This decision (of postponement) is yet to be made public by the state government. The elections were postponed after taking into account a host of reasons. Now these polls would be held some time in October-November this year,” the official told Inditop.

“The revision of voters’ list was taking a long time. The process was to be completed by March 31 but because of the huge task involved, the date was extended till April 10. Also, the employees’ strike has knocked down government plans.”

The official said the elections would have also affected the the tourist season in Kashmir Valley.

The valley lost two tourist seasons owing to the 2008 land row stir when the residents launched agitations and counter-agitations over the diversion of 100 acres of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board. Also in 2009 street protests lasted for weeks after the alleged rape and murder of two women in the south Kashmir town of Shopian.

“The idea is to save the tourist season,” the official added.
