Panaji, April 1 (IANS) Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is working towards making the state’s most important railway station at Margao in South Goa ‘Zero Waste’, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

In a statement issued here, the railway corporation’s Public Relations Officer Baban Ghatge said that systems were being put in place to convert the 250 kg waste generated at the Margao railway station every day to green manure.
“At Margao Station 250 kg of waste is generated every day. We have decided to make Margao Station as a ‘Zero Waste Station’. All waste will be converted suitably to green manure or energy. Finally our aim is to achieve this for all stations in Goa,” Ghatge said.
The Margao railway station is a major Konkan Railway junction for all South-bound trains along the Konkan Railway route and is used by the corporation’s trains as well as those from other railway zones.
The move towards Zero Waste railway stations comes under the aegis of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachch Bharat’ campaign, Ghatge said adding that the corporation was planning to install bio-toilets at all railway stations operated by the Konkan Railway in Goa.
