Kolkata, Sep 1 (IANS) The Left Front, ousted from power after 34 years, Thursday said it would field a woman professor against West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipore assembly constituency.
The by-election is due Sep 25. The Left Front candidate will be Nandini Mukhopadhay of Jadavpur University.
Banerjee, a Lok Sabha member, did not contest the April-May state polls.
State PWD Minister and Trinamool Congress state chief Subrata Bakshi, who won from Bhowanipore, quit the seat to make way for Banerjee, who would be in the fray for the assembly for the first time.
Bhowanipore is part of Banerjee’s Kolkata South Lok Sabha seat.
The Left Front said its candidate in the other assembly by-election, at Basirhat (Uttar), would be Subid Ali Gazi.
That seat fell vacant after Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Mostafa Bin Quasem allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the balcony of his room in the MLA Hostel.
Vote count in both places will take place Sep 28.
