Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday threatened to launch a stir if transmission to TVs of people without set-top boxes was blocked in Kolkata from Nov 1.
The union government has made it compulsory for people in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai to install set-top boxes, without which viewing television will not be possible after Oct 31.
“People are being told that they cannot view television after Oct 31 if they do not acquire set-top boxes. Do not force people to buy set-top boxes,” Banerjee said.
“You cannot force everybody in Kolkata to buy it. There should also be an option available to them,” she said.
Banerjee threatened the union government that she would launch an agitation if TV transmission was blacked out in Kolkata after the Oct 31 deadline for digitisation.
“If the centre does it (blocking transmission), the West Bengal government will not accept it. We will not allow them to implement it forcefully. The central government cannot force the people, especially the poor, to acquire set-top boxes,” she said.
