Mumbai, April 2 (IANS) Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and several party activists were detained when they staged a protest against visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Thursday, an official said.
The Congressmen were protesting against what they termed ‘injustice meted out to Mumbai’ by proposing to make Ahmedabad (Gujarat) an international financial centre, and opposing the discontinuation of foodgrain supply by fair price shops to people holding above poverty line (APL) ration cards.
The protest, by hundreds of activists including a large number of women, was held near the statue of B.R. Ambedkar near Mantralaya, close to the venue where the prime minister attended the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve Bank of India.
Many of them were put into waiting police vans and taken to Colaba police station.
