Lucknow, Aug 30 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday announced the appointment of Atul Gupta as the state’s new police chief.

A 1976 batch Indian Police Service officer, Atul, who chooses not to use his surname, will take over from Karamveer Singh, who retires from service Wednesday.

Atul was currently director general of the state’s anti-corruption organisation with additional charge of managing director of Uttar Pradesh Police Housing Corporation.

Considered an officer of high repute and integrity, the 58-year-old Atul has done stints with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as well as other central agencies. He has held several prestigious assignments in the field as well.
