New Delhi, May 5 (Inditop.com) Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan Wednesday supported enumerating the population on the basis of caste, saying that it is a reality in Indian society and having caste-based data would help the government in planning various socio-economic schemes.
“Ignoring the issue won’t do as caste is a reality in Indian system. Even ticket distribution by political parties is done on the basis of caste,” Paswan told reporters here.
Pointing out that the last caste census was carried out in 1931 in India, Paswan said having data about the population belonging to various backward or Dalit castes would also help the government to properly launch various socio-economic programme for them.
Bihar’s ruling party Janata Dal-United as well as Lalu Prasad-led Rashtyriya Janata Dal (RJD) also have favoured caste-based census.
“There have been attempts to divide Dalits in the name of Mahadalits in Bihar. Hence, it needs to be known the exact population of different caste groups,” Paswan said.
