New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday chaired a meeting of the selection committee which finalized the name of the next Central Vigilance Commissioner.
Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, according to informed sources, is the likely choice for the CVC.
‘The name has been finalized. The government will announce it. I have not raised any objection,’ said opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, one of the three members of the selection committee.
Home Minister P. Chidambaram is the third member after the prime minister.
A list of probable candidates prepared by the Department of Personnel and Training was placed before the panel.
Other bureaucrats whose names figured in the list included former home secretary G.K. Pillai, former chemicals and fertilisers secretary Bijoy Chatterjee, former secretary of legislative affairs V.K. Bhasin and former urban development secretary M. Ramachandran.
On March 3, the Supreme Court quashed the appointment of P.J. Thomas as CVC and unveiled stringent guidelines for future appointments to the post.
