New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday lauded the guidance provided by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the government as UPA-II completed a year, and said that renewal of mandate last year reflected people’s faith in its policies.

‘Under the inspiring guidance of Smt.Sonia Gandhi, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), with all its constituents, rededicates itself to giving the country an effective, purposeful and responsive government,’ the prime minister said at a function to mark the release of the ‘Report to the People 2009-10.’

‘The renewal of our mandate last year showed the faith of the people in our policies and programmes, and in our government’s ability to implement them effectively. We are humbled by the enormity of the responsibility that we face. We are also conscious of the tremendous challenges that lie ahead,’ Manmohan Singh said.

The report had opening words from both the prime minister and Gandhi, who is chairperson of the UPA.

‘The second UPA government is dedicated to building an economically stronger, a socially just, a culturally vibrant, a regionally balanced, a politically participative, a fully educated, a technologically modern, a creative and enterprising India. As we enter the second year of our second term we rededicate ourselves to these objectives and to the welfare of all our citizens,’ the prime minister said in the report.

Said Gandhi: ‘It is the responsibility of every government to ensure that their legislative agenda has at its core, a genuine concern for the well-being of the common man, that it is reflective of their hopes and their aspirations.’
