New Delhi, May 16 (Inditop) The sound of prayer was loud outside the Congress headquarters here early Saturday morning as 19-year-old Prince Singh along with his parents and two priests held special prayers for the victory of the party.
Even before counting began at 8 a.m., Singh, his father Phool Singh and mother Kamlesh came to the Congress office at 24 Akbar Road and sat opposite the main gate to start prayers seeking divine blessings.
Speaking to Inditop, Prince Singh said: “I want the Congress to win. It is the only party that wants the country to progress.”
“We are also praying that Rahul Gandhi (the Gandhi scion and party general secretary) becomes the prime minister. He would be the best prime minister India will have because he is the one who is a messiah of the poor and wants overall development of the country,” said Singh, who lives in the capital’s Karol Bagh.
When the Singh family reached the Congress headquarters by 7 a.m., it was mainly mediapersons who were camping outside the Congress party office waiting for some sign of activity. Leaders and supporters started trickling in later.
Dozens of outdoor broadcasting vans of TV channels were stationed outside the office, literally jamming the entire road.
Another supporter to come was S.K. Tiwari, a flower-trader. He attracted instant attention as he was carrying a huge bouquet shaped like India.
“A Bangalore-based businessman, who is a Congress supporter, gave me the order 15 days back.
“I have been told that after the Congress wins, I have to gift this to Sonia Gandhiji. Over 85 percent of the flowers are imported,” said a proud Tiwari.
Even as photographers and cameramen were furiously clicking him, a huge posse of policemen kept a hawk’s eye. The policemen were stationed outside the Congress office and the adjoining 10 Janpath residence of Congres president Sonia Gandhi.
It was a similar sight outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters at 11 Ashoka Road. The busy road was packed with security and media personnel. A few party workers were also present.
The first one to come to the office was BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar, as the counting began.
“BJP will emerge as single largest party and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as largest alliance. In 2004, the exit polls predicted that NDA will come back to power and this time most of the exit polls are predicting UPA’s win. It is a good omen and results will come in our favour,” a confident Javadekar said.
But the Communist Party of India-Marxist office was totally deserted, except for the media and a few policemen. Party leaders were expected to come to the office after results are out to plan their future strategy.
