New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) The Congress Tuesday named former MP Rajni Patil as the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Maharashtra, caused by the death of union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
The decision to name Patil as the Congress candidate for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat was taken by party chief Sonia Gandhi, the party said.
The vacancy in the upper house was created after Deshumkh (union science and technology minister) passed away Aug 14, 2012. His term was to end April 2, 2018. Deshmukh was also a former chief minister of Maharashtra.
The Election Commission has announced that polling will be held Jan 12, if there is a contest.
