Chandigarh, Dec 31 (IANS) Within a week of the Jan 30 assembly elections being announced in Punjab and the model code of conduct coming into force, authorities across the state have recovered over Rs.120 million (Rs.12 crore) in cash and nearly 8.5 lakh litres of illicit liquor.
Punjab’s special chief electoral officer Usha Sharma said Saturday that static surveillance teams of the Election Commission (EC) had confiscated over Rs.120 million of unaccounted money in cash from various parts of Punjab in just one week.
She said that nearly 8.5 lakh litres of illicit liquor has also been seized from various parts of the state.
The EC Saturday ordered that Indian Police Service officer Ishwar Chander will be the new police commissioner of Ludhiana. The incumbent S.S. Chauhan has been posted out.
The EC is also likely to replace the district police chief of Fatehgarh Sahib as the present chief, R.S. Khatra, has informed the election authorities that his son is likely to contest the election from the district.
Elections to 117 assembly seats in the state take place Jan 30.
