New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Monday said the “whole party stands behind” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was attacked by BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi the day before.
“They make fun of the party and the prime minister. I want to tell them that the whole party stands behind the prime minister,” an aggressive looking Gandhi said at a rally at Mandya in Karnataka.
“Under his (Manmohan Singh’s) leadership, the government had all these achievements,” she said.
Modi said at a rally in Delhi Sunday that Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described Manmohan Singh as a “dehati aurat” (rural woman) during a meeting in New York with Indian and Pakistani journalists.
He accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of insulting Manmohan Singh by ridiculing a government-backed ordinance on convicted lawmakers.
The Congress chief said the party was not afraid of either the BJP or any other opposition party and would continue with its pro-poor agenda.
“We are not afraid of the BJP or any other opposition party. We will continue our sincere efforts for the people of Karnataka and the people of the whole country,” said Gandhi.
She urged the Congress to work in tandem with the government to “fulfil our promises”.
