Chennai, Nov 2 (IANS) The Anna Centenary Library, built by the previous DMK government, will be converted into a super specialty paediatric hospital, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced Tuesday.

The library will be shifted to the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) complex where the Integrated Knowledge Park is being planned.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said the proposed paediatric hospital will be the first of its kind in the country and the state would rank at the top in taking care of the children’s health.

She said: ‘The integrated knowledge park would house offices under DPI, training centre, conference halls, sports complex, distance education studio, incubation centre and a modern central library.’

The decision to set up a paediatric hospital follows the government’s earlier decision to convert the DMK built new legislative building into a super specialty hospital similar to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

The Anna Centenary Library with a capacity to house around 1.2 million books was built at an outlay of Rs.170 crore to commemorate the centenary of late chief minister C.N. Annadurai.

The eight floor building project was completed in two years time and was inaugurated by the former chief minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi.
