Imphal, Feb 13 (Inditop.com) The Trinamool Congress has set up a party unit in Manipur. The party already has units in Tripura, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in India’s northeast.
Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has appointed former Manipur chief minister R.K Dorendro Singh and former parliamentarian from outer Manipur Kim Gangte the joint convenors of the party in Manipur.
“A full-fledged Manipur state committee of the Trinamool Congress will be formed in the next six months,” Gangte told reporters here Friday.
She quoted Banerjee as saying that the Trinamool Congress MPs would raise the main issues relating to Manipur in parliament. The issues include repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 in Manipur.
According to Trinamool Congress sources, some political heavyweights and several professionals in Manipur, including former assembly deputy speaker T.T. Haokip, are lining up to join the party unit.
The northeastern state goes to assembly elections in early 2012.
The Trinamool Congress has already set up its base in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Left- ruled Tripura. In last year’s Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections, it won five seats and became the main opposition party in the state.
Gangte said the Trinamool Congress would soon form a state unit in another northeastern state, Mizoram.
