New Delhi, April 17 (Inditop) The Congress Friday said its Delhi unit chief J.P. Aggarwal and Ramesh Kumar would replace the riot-tainted Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar as the party’s candidates in two Delhi constituencies. Ramesh Kumar is Sajjan Kumar’s brother.
Aggarwal and Ramesh Kumar would be the new candidates for Northeast Delhi and South Delhi respectively.
Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, who were originally named the Congress Lok Sabha contestants from the two Delhi seats, were pulled out of the race after many Sikhs held demonstrations and journalist Jarnail Singh hurled his shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram to protest the clean chit given by the Central Bureau of Investigation to Tytler in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
Aggarwal, who is a Rajya Sabha MP, was made Delhi Congress chief in 2007 to rein in dissatisfaction when a major section of the party’s Delhi unit had openly revolted against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
According to party leaders, Aggarwal played a key role in bringing the party together in last year’s assembly polls.
Ramesh Kumar has been a legislator in the Delhi assembly.
Tytler has been an MP four times. Sajjan Kumar, the sitting MP from Outer Delhi, has been people’s representative in parliament three times.
But there were protests against Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for their alleged role in the riots targeting Sikhs in 1984, prompting the Congress to withdraw them as candidates.
