New Delhi, April 20 (Inditop.com) Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and IPL governing council member Farooq Abdullah Tuesday came out in support of Lalit Modi saying the cricket administrator has got into trouble because of his stupendous rise and there was no need for him to resign at this stage.

“Why should he go? We have to see. There is a meeting on (April) 26th. Let’s see what the charges are and what his replies are. We can’t become judges,” Abdullah, who is also president of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, told reporters outside parliament.

The IPL governing council is to meet April 26 to discuss allegations against Modi of lack of transparency in the IPL bids. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) working committee is meeting May 2.

Asked about the demands for Modi’s resignation, Abdullah said detractors of the IPL commissioner did not want him to rise. “That’s why he got into trouble,” he said.

On the government probe into IPL funding, Abdullah said there was hype around the tournament and, therefore, fingers had been raised.

Abdullah opposed demands for nationalization of the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told Lok Sabha Monday that appropriate action would be taken as per law if any wrong doing was found in the manner in which IPL was funded. He said all aspects, including sources of funding and the routes through which the funds arrived, would be looked into.
