Kottayam (Kerala), Jan 1 (IANS) With the Nair Service Society (NSS), the social organisation of Hindu Nairs, preparing to appoint their members as temple priests, this vocation may no longer be the prerogative of Brahmins, an NSS official said here Tuesday.

“Brahmins continue to exploit matters concerning spirituality. Very soon, Nairs will be appointed as priests in all temples we run and manage,” said NSS general secretary Sukumaran Nair at the organisation’s headquarters in Changnacherry in Kottayam district.
Hindus in Kerala constitute more than 50 per cent of the 3.25 crore population, followed by Muslims at 24 per cent and Christians at 22 per cent.
The Ezhava community in the state edges out the Nair community by a slight margin.
