Vatican City, April 2 (Inditop.com/AKI) In a statement targeting the launch of the “abortion pill” in Italy, Pope Benedict XVI has said Christians should not accept laws that protect the “wrong” practice.

The pope made the remarks during a pre-Easter mass Thursday, the same day the controversial abortion pill was to be made available in Italian hospitals.

“It is important for Christians not to accept a wrong that is enshrined in law — for example the killing of innocent unborn children,” the pontiff said at the St Peter’s Basilica.

The Catholic Church and conservative politicians have been strongly opposing the launch of the ‘RU486’ abortion pill in Italy, one of the last European countries to make it available. The pill, also known as mifepristone, has been used in France since 1988.

Meanwhile, Roberto Cota, governor of Piedmonte region has vowed to stop the abortion pill from entering hospitals and to “let it rot in warehouses.”

The Vatican has recently been engulfed in a scandal involving thousands of alleged victims of child abuse in Europe and North America.
