Dehradun, Aug 19 (Inditop.com) A series of landslides triggered by incessant rains over the past three days in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand has disrupted the Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage, an official said here Wednesday.
“Since movement on the Haldwani-Pithoragarh as well as Tanakpur-Pithoragarh roads was suspended on account of the landslides, the 14th group heading for Kailash-Mansarovar had to hold back its journey,” the official spokesman told Inditop.
“We were compelled to divert the Yatra from Almora via Beninag and Didihat to reach Dharchula from where the members could proceed towards the Tibet border,” he added.
He hoped the Pithoragrh road would be restored by Thursday morning.
“We are trying to get the road partially operational by Wednesday evening, but I am sure normal traffic movement would resume by Thursday morning,” he said.
Barely a fortnight back, a cloudburst followed by heavy landslide had completely wiped out three hamlets in Munsiyari sub-division of Pithoragarh district, killing 43 people and more than 100 cattle.
The mount Kailash and the adjoining lake Mansarovar in Tibet of China are considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.
The pilgrimage, taking the Pithoragarh route, is organised by the external affairs ministry.
