Chennai, Aug 13 (IANS) Around 250 children Monday petitioned the district collector in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu to stop work on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in the region.

The children hail from Idinthakarai, Kudankulam, Kootapulii, Perumanal and Kuthenkazhi areas, M. Pushparayam of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy told IANS over telephone.
According to him, a petition from the children would be sent to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well.
In their petition, the children have expressed anguish at the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board for giving permission to Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) to load the enriched uranium fuel even as the Madras High Court is hearing series of cases filed against the project.
NPCIL is building two reactors of 1,000 MW each with Russian technology at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli, around 650 km from here.
