New York, Sep 15 (DPA) Juan Del Potro had a few seconds to reflect on his momentous first Grand Slam title as he lay flat-out on the court after defeating Roger Federer to win the US Open.

“It’s difficult to explain this moment,” said the 20-year-old Argentine, who prevented Federer from setting a modern record with six straight New York trophies with his 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 upset here Monday.

“Since I was young I’ve dreamed of taking this trophy. I did my dream, and it’s an unbelievable moment. It’s an amazing match, everything is perfect — I don’t know, I can’t believe it.”

The 20-year-old will return to his career-best fifth ranking after the triumph.

But that mattered little in the heat of victory: “I will go home with a trophy. It’s my best sensation. I just want to live this moment. Of course I will be in the history of this tournament. That’s amazing for me.”
