London, April 10 (Inditop) Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson rubbished all speculation about his retirement at the end of the season and said he is targeting two more Champions League trophies.
The 67-year-old Scot is a legend at Old Trafford and has won over 30 trophies during his 23-year tenure. His incredible haul of silverware also includes 10 Premiership titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League.
United are on the verge of their 17th Premier League title and that will bring them at par with record holders Liverpool.
But Ferguson insists that it is the Champions League, and not domestic success, that will keep him at the club for next two years.
“Hopefully I will be here for another two or three years because I intend to stay on as long as that. I’d love the club to win more European trophies than they have done and I think I’ve made this point a few times over the years,” Ferguson was quoted as saying by the CNN.
“I don’t think we’ve won the number we should have won. There have been years when we’ve been unlucky and years we’ve been disappointed, and there’ve been years when we’ve thrown games away. If we could win a couple more European trophies, then I would definitely quit,” he said.
Despite his association with the club for more than two decades, Ferguson feels that he still enjoys the pressure the job brings.
“Manchester United is a great club to work for – the level of expectation drives you – you cannot afford to be complacent at any time. I still work as hard as I did when I first came to the club.
“I enjoy the expectation. I enjoy the challenge of having to be No.1 or of trying to be No.1.”
On his successor, he said: “Whoever it is, it needs to be someone with experience. I like Jose Mourinho. He is a good guy and someone I get on very well with.”
“But people forget how quickly the game changes. The job of a football manager is a pretty fragile one. You can be on the very top of the world and then after two defeats you are the worst team ever.”
