San Jose, Sep 15 (DPA) Rodrigo Kenton was sacked as Costa Rica’s national football coach, the Costa Rican Football Federation (Fedefutbol) said.

At a press conference in San Jose Monday, Fedefutbol President Eduardo Li said the institution had asked Kenton to step down in the face of recent poor results in the North and Central American and Caribbean qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Costa Rica have lost their last three games in the qualifiers — 4-0 to Honduras, 3-0 to Mexico and 1-0 to El Salvador — and slipped from the top of the table to fourth place.

If the qualifiers were to end now, the Central American team would have to face a South American rival in a play-off for a place in the World Cup.
