London, July 1 (DPA) Newly promoted Burnley have signed striker Steven Fletcher and defender Tyrone Mears as their preparations for their first Premier League season gather pace.
Fletcher, a 22-year-old Scotland forward, arrives from Hibernian for a club-record fee of three million pounds ($4.9 million). He signed a four-year contract Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Mears joined for 500,000 pounds from Derby County, where manager Nigel Clough had assured him he had a future, despite being loaned out last season to Marseille.
“It feels great to be a Burnley player,” Mears told the official website. “Marseille, where I was on loan last season, were a great club, and if it had been a different situation I could have signed for them, but the most important thing for me was to be in England, playing in the Premier League, and Burnley have given me that opportunity.”
