Kolkata, Aug 1 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was Sunday given life membership of East Bengal club, one of the country’s top football teams, which also presented lifetime achievement awards to former stars Tulsidas Balaram, Manilal Ghatak and Poltu Roy.
Mukherjee was present as the chief guest in East Bengal’s 91st foundation day programme at the club tent here.
The club was founded by a group of sports lovers in North Kolkata’s Kumortuli area on this day in 1920.
Receiving the lifetime membership, Mukherjee recalled the club’s glorious record in soccer including its commendable performances against foreign clubs over the years. Among the lifetime achievement winners, Balaram was not present.
