Kolkata, Jan 23 (Inditop.com) Former international hockey star Bruce Shannahan took to golf because of the similarities in the two sports. Not only did he fall in love with the game but also made it a point to excel as he displayed some good golfing skills to lead his team Royal Perth Golf Club to the top at the end of the first round Saturday of the Vodafone Royals Trophy.
Royal Perth were tied for the lead with Royal Montreal Golf Club at 40 points after the first round at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.
Breathing down the leaders’ neck were the home team RCGC `B’ at 39 points and Royal Melbourne Golf Club at 38 points. In the first round that was played on an eclectic stableford format, the better stableford score of the partners on each of the respective holes was chosen to arrive at the team total. Apart from Bruce, who is the captain of the club, Royal Perth GC included Francis James Bryant.
Also sharing the limelight were the husband-wife duo of Ravi and Binnie Mehra representing Royal Montreal. RCGC `B’ represented by Aditya Khaitan and Laxman Singh while Royal Melbourne GC was represented by Stephen and Margie Lilley.
In the individual event played for the Vodafone Invitational Trophy, Noel Britto of IBM Bangalore emerged as the winner with 35 points pipping Aditya Khaitan on a countback.
The Bangalore duo of Ramneek Bakshi and Anees Ahmed bagged the team honours at 41 points.
