Johannesburg, Jan 10 (DPA) The South African Football Association (SAFA) has extended its condolences to the members of the Togo national football team and the families of those who were killed in an attack on their team bus.
In a statement released by SAFA, the organization’s president Kirsten Nematandani recorded his shock and disappointment about the attack that occurred when the Togolese team, which has since withdrawn from the Africa Cup of Nations, entered Angola to drive to the venue of their games, Cabinda.
“This is a tragedy for the Togolese players and their families, as well as the people of Togo. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this hour.
“We further wish to extend our condolences to the people of Angola and our colleagues in the Angolan Football Federation. They have our full support in dealing with this tragic and horrific incident.
“We wish to express our confidence in the ability of the Angolan law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Nematandani.
Togo were drawn into Group B with Ghana, Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast.
South Africa, who are to host the World Cup finals later this year, failed to qualify for Angola.
