Kolkata, May 31 (IANS) Firecrackers lit the night sky, and young and old danced and jived as Kolkata residents indulged in wild celebrations after city football giants Mohun Bagan were crowned national champions after a gap of 13 years.

Donning the green and maroon jerseys, hundreds of people hit the streets throwing gulal at each other as Mohun Bagan held Bengaluru FC 1-1 to claim the title.
Youngsters on bikes zoomed around the city while old offered sweets to each other. With a large fan base, the scenes were maddening in north of the city where people from all walks and ages jived wildly amid incessant burst of fire crackers.
Club secretary Anjan Mitra said the victorious team will be given a grand welcome upon its arrival in the city on Monday.
“I am speechless, I am overwhelmed,” said Mitra reacting to the victory.
“The team is coming to the city tomorrow (Monday). The entire team along with players who could not go would come to the club in the team bus straight from the airport. All the members and supporters will be present at the club to welcome the heroes,” he added.
A late header from Nigerian defender Bello Rasaq saw Mohun Bagan hold Bengaluru FC 1-1 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru to claim its first I-League triumph.
