Raipur, Jan 6 (Inditop.com) Two people have been arrested and marijuana plants over a 10-acre area have been uprooted in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, a senior police officer said Wednesday, adding that the plants were being grown by Maoists.
The marijuana plants were traced when a police team visited the interior pocket of Bastar region’s Tarud village, more than 500 km south of state capital Raipur.
“It was a 10 acre plot in a Maoist-commanded area where ganja (marijuana) plantations were found. After spotting the plants, a massive contingent of policemen visited the field Tuesday and uprooted the plants which were estimated to be worth millions,” T.J. Longkumer, inspector general of police (Bastar range), told Inditop.
Describing this as the “first ever case in the state of Maoists’ involvement in ganja plantations”, Longkumer said that two people who originally belonged to Tamil Nadu were arrested while four others who were taking care of the plants were absconding.
“A team of about 100 policemen was rushed Wednesday to track down the absconding men and the Maoists who were involved in the plantations. We are gathering details whether Maoists have more such plantations in the area,” Longkumer said.
