Islamabad, April 25 (Inditop) Taliban militants Saturday stopped a convoy of Pakistani security forces from entering the militants’ stronghold in Swat valley, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported Saturday.

A convoy of seven army trucks was stopped by armed Taliban at Qamabr, a small town in Mingora, the main city in Swat valley in North-West Frontier Province, the news agency quoted Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan as saying.

The militants feared that the security forces might launch a fresh offensive, he said.

He said the deployment of troops in Swat was against a deal signed in February to introduce Islamic laws in Swat and other areas in the northwest.

There was no official reaction to the Taliban stopping the army convoy from entering Swat.

Official sources said that local authorities were in consultation with the Taliban leaders to convince them to allow the convoy to enter, according to the NNI.

Chief of the army staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Friday said the army was determined to root out terrorism and would not allow the militants to dictate terms to the government or impose their way of life.

A group of Taliban militants, who had entered Buner district from Swat, some 100 km from capital Islamabad, withdrew Friday following successful talks among the administration and the Taliban.
