Gangster ‘Kakkathope’ Balaji, involved in over 40 criminal cases including extortion and murder, was killed by police near Vyasarpadi Jeeva railway station. When police tried to arrest him, he attacked them, prompting officers to open fire. Balaji was declared dead at Government Stanley Hospital. He had significant control over parts of north Chennai.
