New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) The media can play a positive role in improving the human rights and health of homosexual men in South Asia, a report said Wednesday.
The report titled “A Framework for Media Engagement on MSM and Transgender Persons in South Asia” has been developed by the Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
“Though media coverage of HIV has increased over the last two decades, the coverage of issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identities has often been weak and objectionable,” said a statement quoting Edmund Settle, policy advisor at the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre.
“Today, more than ever before, there is both an imperative and an opportunity for community-based organisations to systematically harness media,” said CFAR executive director Akhila Sivadas.
