Beijing, March 1 (IANS) Around 1,700 people in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai last year donated their bodies for medical research.
A total of 1,698 people donated their bodies for research or for their corneas for transplant, the Shanghai Daily reported.
According to the Shanghai Red Cross Society, since body donation was initiated in the city in 1982, a total of 31,327 people have signed agreements to donate their bodies or corneas.
A total of 6,090 people had fulfilled their promises, officials said.
Medical experts have proposed an amendment to the city’s body donation law so that organs from donated bodies like liver, kidney and heart can be used for transplant.
At present, people can only donate corneas for transplant but the rest of their bodies are used for medical research.
