Lagos, Jan 1 (IANS) At least 50 people were killed in southeast Nigeria when two groups fought over a piece of land, officials said.
The clashes between the Ezza and Ezillo communities erupted Saturday in Ebonyi state over a piece of land that both sides claim, government spokesman Onyekachi Eni said.
The dispute between the two communities dates to 2008.
The government in 2010 had allocated alternate land to the Ezza community to compensate them but the violence did not stop, Xinhua reported Sunday.
Ebonyi Governor Martins Elechi has warned the government would not tolerate the wanton killing and destruction of property.
‘It is unfortunate that these hoodlums want to return anarchy to the area in spite of the success of the government in bringing peace since 2010,’ he said.
