Beijing, Sep 1 (IANS) A staggering 91 million Chinese are expected to travel by train during upcoming holidays, authorities said Thursday.

The Ministry of Railways (MOR) Thursday said it will give top priority to ensuring safe transportation, particularly for its high-speed trains.

The number of passengers travelling during the mid-autumn festival holiday, which is from Sep 10 to 12, will increase by 12.3 percent from a year earlier to reach 22 million, reported Xinhua.

For the seven-day National Day holiday, which begins Oct 1, a total of 69 million passengers are predicted to travel by train, up 8.5 percent year-on-year.

The holiday season travel peak will arrive Oct 1, a day on which 8.5 million people are expected to take trains.

Last Sunday, the MOR ordered its trains to run at slower speeds as safety concerns have been raised following a train crash July 23 that killed 41 people in Wenzhou city in east China’s Zhejiang province.
