Tripoli, Dec 30 (IANS/AKI) Al Qaeda has sent experienced militants to Libya in an effort to form an armed group amid the fighting that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, CNN reported, citing an unnamed Libyan source briefed by Western counter-terrorism officials.

Among the jihadists was a fighter who had been released from jail in Britain after a brief detention. He was sent to Libya on the orders of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and has been there since May, the report said.

He has formed a group of around 200 fighters recruited along the Egyptian border.
