Rio de Janeiro, Jan 12 (Inditop.com/EFE) A newborn baby survived after being thrown down a trash chute from the fifth floor of a residential building in this Brazilian city, police said.
The baby, which weighed 2.8 kg at birth, was found around 7 a.m. Sunday in the garbage receptacle by a porter of a building in the west Rio neighbourhood of Jacarepagua and was immediately taken to hospital, where it was diagnosed as in stable condition.
Police said that the mother acknowledged that she gave birth Saturday in the apartment without any help from anyone and that, since she thought the baby was dead, wrapped it in a newspaper and threw it down the trash chute.
The 21-year-old woman, who said that she didn’t know she was pregnant until the baby was born, was also taken to hospital.
Facing a charge of attempted infanticide, she was freed on bail of 2,000 reais ($1,140).
Police Capt Joao Luiz Garcia said the woman will be questioned again at another time because she is suffering from depression and her mental state cannot be considered normal.
