Rio de Janeiro, July 2 (IANS) Less than a day after signing former Dutch international Clarence Seedorf, Botafogo has revealed more big names could be on their way to the Brazilian Serie A club.
Botafogo president Mauricio Assumpcao said the arrival of Seedorf alone would not guarantee success.
“We have a quality squad, but to be champion we need reinforcements,” Assumpcao told Globoesporte. “We are currently looking for these. Seedorf has arrived now and we will continue to work so we can have more new parts.”
Assumpcao declined to reveal details of Seedorf’s two-year contract, but confirmed the deal was the most lucrative ever signed by a foreign player in Brazil, reported Xinhua.
Seedorf is expected to arrive in Rio Friday but the club is unsure when the veteran will be ready to play. Botafogo is currently in ninth place in Brazil’s Serie A championship standings after seven rounds.
Meanwhile the Rio club confirmed Sunday the exit of former Real Sociedad striker German Herrera, who has signed a three-year contract with UAE outfit Emirates FC.
Uruguay international forward Loco Abreu, unhappy at his new role as a bit-part player under coach Oswaldo de Oliveira, is also tipped to leave the club.
