London, May 20 (Inditop.com) The new British government led by Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday pledged to forge “a special relationship” with India and support New Delhi’s demand for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
“We will work to establish a new special relationship with India and seek closer engagement with China, while standing firm on human rights in all our bilateral relationships,” read the text of the coalition agreement between Cameron’s Conservative Party and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s Liberal Democrats published Thursday.
The agreement favours the expansion of the UN Security Council and permanent membership to India on the restructured council.
“We support reform of the UN Security Council, including permanent seats for Japan, India, Germany, Brazil and African representation,” it said.
The government also pledged to intensify “cultural, educational, commercial and diplomatic links with many nations beyond Europe and North America to strengthen Britain’s relations with the fastest-growing areas of the world economy”.
