London, Sep 2 (IANS) The number of individuals found guilty of sex offences on children under 16 in England and Wales has risen by nearly 60 percent in last six years.

According to the ministry of justice, 1,363 people were convicted in 2005, while the number has risen to 2,135 in 2010, The Sun reported.

The statistics were revealed through a Freedom of Information request.

The ministry said the massive rise in statistics is due to better detection and raised awareness.

Child protection groups, however, say the number is relatively small and it remains an under-reported crime.
