Beijing, Sep 30 (IANS) A senior official in the Shanghai city administration has been arrested and sacked from his position for allegedly taking bribes, a media report said Friday.
Chen Meng, deputy director of the city’s Putuo district, was arrested Sep 20 after it was alleged that he engaged in bribery before he took up the post in February, the Shanghai Daily reported.
A probe found that Chen took advantage of his position to win construction contracts for others, and accepted large sums of money from investors when he was deputy director of Shanghai’s Songjiang district administration from 2003 till early this year.
An investigative reporter claimed on a blog that during the time Chen worked for Songjiang district, he fraudulently helped his wife become director of the Shanghai branch of the China Minsheng Banking Corp.
Chen was then in charge of the construction department. He asked property developers to become his wife’s clients, and she was successful in her bid to become director of the bank after securing deposits worth several billion yuan.
In similar corruption cases last year, two Putuo district officials were jailed for 14 and 11 years for taking bribes.
