Beijing, June 11 (IANS) A 27-year-old pregnant Chinese woman who can’t swim is being hailed as a hero after she jumped into a pond to save a neighbour’s toddler.
Peng Weiping, who is six-and-a-half months pregnant with twins, said she acted on instinct when she jumped into the two-metre-deep pond to rescue two-year-old Shen Mengya.
Some people, however, called it a reckless act as it could have endangered her unborn babies, China Daily reported Monday.
Peng and the unborn babies have been described as “stable” by doctors treating her in Lingbi County People’s Hospital. They said the act could have led to serious consequences.
Peng told the newspaper on phone from her hospital bed: “I’m scared of water as I nearly drowned once when I was little.
“But it was so cold in the water that I feared Shen Mengya could die.
“Her face was pale and her lips turned blue with cold when I found her in the water, and she had little vital signs of life,” said Peng, who saved the child last Tuesday.
